I am more than happy to write a reference letter for a student. However, I will only write letters for
(a) students I have worked with on a directed study, research project or honors project
and
(b) students who have completed at least one class with me, where they earned an B or higher. However, I will only be able to write a very strong letter if you participated in class, came to office hours etc. Basically, the better I know you, the stronger letter I can write.
If I do agree to write a recommendation, you have several responsibilities:
Give me at least three weeks notice before the letter is due, preferably a month.
I will need you to provide information for the letter:
- description of the organization/program
- deadline for postmarked/received
- how I am supposed to submit it
- an addressed and stamped envelope if it is to be mailed
- any forms that need to be included.
and provide information about you and your performance in my course:
- the course(s) and the semester(s)/year(s) when you took the class
- It is also helpful if you can show me copies of the work you have done for the course, especially if it’s been a few semesters.
I will also need copies of:
- your CV/Resume
- your personal statements that you are submitting with the application
- Research proposal (if applicable)
I highly suggest you email me reminders a week before the due date. It will be your responsibility check with the program or school to ensure the document has been received.
